EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bryan ISD board members discussed state lawmakers' inaction on public school funding during their May 5 meeting, noting that funds favor private schools and leave teacher contracts uncertain. Administrators said they cannot yet recommend changes to compensation for the next school year (additional funding based on enrollment could add $7 million) as state decisions have not been made.  WTAW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On May 6, four tornadoes hit the Brazos Valley with an EF1 in Jewett and three EF0 events in Milam, near Franklin, and near Frankston, and a worker was rescued after slipping near Highway 7. Rainfall for the first week of May was heavy, with at least 12 inches off Highway 30 east of Bryan/College Station (and nearly 5 inches recorded in Bryan’s historic eastside).  WTAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a Brazos County commission meeting on May 6, 2025, Judge Duane Peters said opponents' accusations about the future East Loop Highway east of College Station and Bryan were false — noting a November 2022 bond election where 67% of voters approved the project. He stated that overturning the citizens' vote would be inappropriate for his court.  WTAW

  • Texas A&M men’s basketball record scorer Wade Taylor IV (a three-time All-SEC selection) will attend the NBA G League Elite Camp at Wintrust Arena in Chicago from May 9-11 to showcase his skills in five-on-five games and drills.  WTAW
  • Texas A&M reliever Grant Cunningham was named a finalist for the Tony Gwynn Trophy by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association on Wednesday, May 7. He is recognized for his strong community service, including leading campus events and youth programs, and he maintains a 3.4 GPA while studying Business Administration.  WTAW
  • Texas A&M athletics has unveiled its eight-match non-conference soccer schedule for 2025 that features home games at Ellis Field against Baylor, Lamar, Texas State, UConn, and Lafayette, along with road trips to Denver, SFA, and TCU—plus two exhibition matches against Rice and UTRGV at Ellis Field.  WTAW
  • Texas A&M Athletics will graduate 86 student-athletes at Reed Arena today and tomorrow—19 of whom will earn advanced degrees—and former football players Reggie McNeal and Jorvorskie Lane will receive their honors.  WTAW
