EDUCATION NEWS

  • On May 8, College Station council members testified before a Texas House committee about a proposed state moratorium on new impact fees with some supporting the measure and others opposing it — the debate focused on funding city growth. On May 6, Texas A&M’s RELLIS campus in Bryan dedicated a new animal reproductive biotechnology center and will break ground on a $25.3 million public service training complex next Tuesday, May 13 — the complex will host police and lineworker training programs.  WTAW
  • Brazos County State Senator Charles Schwertner appeared on WTAW to discuss the final stretch of the legislative session — including issues like property taxes and school funding. Bryan ISD school board members met on May 5 to address lawmakers’ inaction on public school funding and noted that switching to enrollment-based funding could add an extra $7 million for the district.  WTAW
  • Texas A&M Athletics announced the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown football game will move from Saturday, Nov. 29 to Friday, Nov. 28 in Austin (a schedule change ahead of Thanksgiving). On May 6, system officials dedicated a new Animal Reproductive Biotechnology Center at the RELLIS campus in Bryan and scheduled a groundbreaking on Tuesday, May 13 for the TEEX Public Service Training Complex ($25.3 million project set to finish in May 2026).  WTAW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Texas A&M Health’s Dementia and Alzheimer’s Research Initiative held its inaugural symposium on May 7 at the Texas A&M Hotel and Conference Center — uniting experts from several departments to boost research on dementia and Alzheimer’s. The meeting featured plans for $1 million in seed grants to build cross-department teams that will advance diagnosis and treatment.  The Eagle

  • Texas A&M softball, the nation's top team, opened the SEC Tournament as the number two seed against the number seven South Carolina Gamecocks on Thursday night at Jack Turner Stadium — first pitch was set for about 7 p.m. and the game was broadcast on the SEC Network and local radio.  WTAW
