- ➤ Bryan man Olajawon Mason, 32, was sentenced to 40 years in prison on June 6 for aggravated assault after he strangled and beat his girlfriend and threatened her sister with a firearm during an incident on September 15, 2022—lifetime protection orders were issued for both women. WTAW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At the Bryan ISD meeting on June 2, CFO Kevin Beesaw said the state funding bill would force the district to consider major cuts to school programs plus incoming CFO Norma Friddle noted that pay raises excluded key staff. At the College Station ISD meeting on June 6, board members criticized state lawmakers for favoring private schools and neglecting public education. WTAW
- ➤ Cage Sawyers, the non-voting student regent, spoke at the May meeting of the Texas A&M system board of regents and said his ideas on Hispanic inclusion, rural support, and job readiness were welcomed by the board. He thanked the board for the opportunity—Sawyers, who graduated from Texas A&M law school last month, has represented 165,000 students—while the governor appointed Prairie View A&M student Jaquavous Doucette as his successor. Athletes Yakushina, Bii, and Solovev set new marks—Yakushina broke the NCAA freshman heptathlon record, Bii set a Kenyan outdoor record in the triple jump, and Solovev achieved a school record in the pole vault. - ➤ Texas A&M golfer Phichaksn Maichon earned a spot on the PING All-America Second Team after finishing runner-up at the NCAA Championship and winning four tournaments — he also secured his Korn Ferry Tour card last weekend. He made his professional debut at the BMW Charity Pro-Am in Greer. WTAW
- ➤ Texas A&M women’s tennis added Illinois transfer Violeta Martinez to its 2025–26 roster, announced Monday by head coach Mark Weaver. Martinez excelled in singles and doubles play at Illinois — and she looks ready to contribute to the team in the fall. WTAW
- ➤ Texas A&M freshman Theo Papamalamis qualified for professional tennis play through the ITF Men’s College Accelerator Program—he will get six main draw spots in tournaments starting June 30 until March 2026.
