  • The Bush Library celebrated Juneteenth on Friday with music and a barbecue at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center. Fred White—along with rappers Kyle Harvey and Michael 5000 Watts—led a panel discussion that explained the holiday’s history and its importance for locals.  The Eagle

CRIME NEWS

  • Three Houston men were arrested in College Station on June 18th after a high-risk traffic stop by Bryan, College Station, and Brazos County police linked a white F-150 to multiple daytime home burglaries in Bryan’s Oakmont and College Station’s Raintree neighborhoods—each charged with attempted burglary of habitation and possession of criminal instruments.  WTAW
  • Andrew Gutierrez was sentenced to 25 years in prison on June 17th for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he attacked his 11-week pregnant partner in January 2024 using a kitchen knife with a 10 inch blade; he was previously jailed for family violence in 2016 and must serve half his sentence before he is eligible for parole.  WTAW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • College Station ISD board members and administrators began changing campus boundaries for elementary, intermediate and middle schools on Tuesday, June 17, as CFO Heather Wilson reported that the new plans will adjust school zones. Texas A&M system employees hosted a retirement reception for Chancellor John Sharp on Wednesday, June 18, and he was honored with the U.S. Army’s Meritorious Public Service Medal as he prepared to finish his 14-year tenure on June 30.  WTAW
  • Texas A&M President Mark A. Welsh III named Dr. Tim Scott as his next chief of staff, and the announcement was made this week with Scott set to join the team soon—official details about his role will be shared later.  The Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At the end of March, 150 Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce volunteers collected local economy data from 679 businesses and shared the survey results with Brazos County Commissioners. Texas A&M system employees hosted a retirement reception on June 18 for Chancellor John Sharp, who received the U.S. Army’s Meritorious Public Service Medal for his work in advancing defense research.  WTAW

  • Texas A&M track & field team earned five South Central Region awards from USTFCCCA after winning the men’s national title and a third-place finish for the women at the NCAA Outdoor Championships—head coach Pat Henry was named both the Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year while Aleksandr Solovev, Winny Bii, and assistant coach Mario Sategna also received honors.  WTAW
