CRIME NEWS

  • Brazos County district court found Larry Bollin, 31 from Iola, guilty of murdering a co-worker at the Kent Moore Cabinets plant in northwest Bryan after a 45-minute jury deliberation on July 17—sentencing is pending.  WTAW
  • Bryan police arrested 28-year-old Lorne Martinez from Hearne after monitoring phone calls from Brazos County jail linked him to stealing personal identity information of 50 people including names, birth dates, social security numbers and bank cards—he remains jailed on illegal possession charges, controlled substance counts and evading arrest—with bonds totaling $113,000.  WTAW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas A&M Faculty Senate held its next to last meeting as an independent group before Senate Bill 37 takes effect on September 1. Senate Bill 37 will put the senate under board regents and the university president—appointing up to 60 members—according to Senate Speaker Andrew Klein.  WTAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At its July meeting, the Bryan city council heard an update from the downtown parking committee formed in February 2024 to study customer parking improvements. The committee recommended keeping free on-street parking and exploring technology to check parking time limits — new signage has already helped guide motorists to city-owned lots.  WTAW
  • Bryan Councilwoman Marca Ewers-Shurtleff discussed her law background, the city budget and a district beautification project during her interview on The Infomaniacs—she spoke with WTAW’s Chelsea Reber on July 17.  WTAW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Seventy-four SEC student-athletes attended the Leadership Council meeting at the Omni Hotel in Atlanta on Thursday and today, with four from Texas A&M taking part. The meeting featured presentations on career planning and legislative updates by SEC officials and a representative from Parker Executive Search — providing a forum for the athletes to share their insights.  WTAW
  • Texas A&M men’s golf will join an elite field at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country Club on September 29—30, giving local fans a chance to see the team compete against top collegiate squads. Head coach Brian Kortan announced the schedule as the squad prepares with key returning players and promising newcomers.  WTAW
