COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nonprofit organizations in the Brazos Valley are invited to register for this year’s Brazos Valley Gives event starting Tuesday, October 21, which aims to raise over $1M with 200 nonprofits participating. The registration deadline is Friday, September 5, and nonprofits pay a $150 fee (or $50 with an endowment) with those registering by Friday noon, August 1, eligible for a $500 early bird prize.  WTAW

CRIME NEWS

  • Three teens were charged on Sunday morning after a fight broke out at a Bryan Whataburger.  The Eagle
  • Bryan police arrested seven men on prostitution charges last Friday at an unidentified hotel after the men responded to website ads by calling a BPD number to make reservations—two remain detained for immigration issues while five were released on $5,000 bonds.  WTAW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the July 21st meeting, the Bryan ISD board heard again from committee representatives promoting a $397 million bond issue set for the November election—this proposal would fund athletics facilities, career and technical education programs, and repairs to district buildings. The board must decide by August 18th whether to call the election, which supporters say will not raise property taxes.  WTAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At the July 15 meeting, the Brazos County Commission was divided over a proposal to cut public comment time from four to three minutes per person and limit debate on each topic. County judge Kyle Kacal said speakers — all nine who testified — opposed the changes, so commissioners voted to keep the current rules.  WTAW
  • Texas A&M University System Chancellor Glenn Hegar said he does not see faculty senates disappearing even if Senate Bill 37 requires changes unless authorized by the board. System staff will provide guidance on implementing the law at a meeting on Aug. 27 — a move that supports the university’s focus on improving student success.  My Aggie Nation

SPORTS NEWS

  • Texas A&M football players Le’Veon Moss and Marcel Reed have been named to the preseason Maxwell Award watch list that honors the best college player. The semifinalists will be announced on November 11 and the winner declared on December 11 — the Maxwell Awards will be presented on March 13 in Atlanta.  WTAW
  • Texas A&M men's golf team announced a challenging five-tournament fall schedule that will see them play at elite courses in Minnesota, Illinois, Texas, Wisconsin, and Alabama — beginning with the Gopher Invitational on Sept. 7-8 at Windsong Farm Golf Club. They plan to build on last season’s strong finishes by competing in top national fields over a 49-day span this fall.  WTAW
