EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brett Meisinger leads Texas A&M’s Poultry Judging Team—he guides mostly first-year students to three national titles and teaches courses on poultry production and waste management. He began coaching as a graduate student even though he never judged poultry before and shows that passion and hard work win in the classroom.  The Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Brazos County commissioners proposed a property tax rate increase of one-third of one cent for the upcoming fiscal year during their meeting on August 26—citing lost property valuations and new state restrictions. A public hearing will be held on September 9 at 8:30 a.m.—the tax rate will be finalized later that day.  WTAW
  • At the August 19 meeting, county commissioners voted three to two to keep paying their share for the RMA audit even though some wanted to end the local authority due to opposition to the east loop highway project—this cost is shared with College Station, Bryan, and Texas A&M. New chief Karl Mooney apologized for missing the meeting and said the RMA board will provide updates on upcoming actions—more details will follow.  WTAW
  • Brazos County commissioner Fred Brown got his request granted when the commission voted unanimously on August 26 to switch from Diners Club credit cards to a card program—one that offers rebates based on spending and prompt payments. The county will join the new program managed by the state comptroller’s office.  WTAW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tereza Magalhaes, a vector biologist at Texas A&M AgriLife, is studying how mosquito-borne diseases like Zika, dengue, chikungunya, and Madariaga virus spread—she aims to help public health officials prepare better prevention measures. Her interdisciplinary research connects entomology, epidemiology, and public health to forecast and control future outbreaks.  The Eagle

SPORTS NEWS

  • Texas A&M's No. 7 women's golf team begins its season today at Pebble Beach Golf Links in the Carmel Cup, which runs until Aug. 31 and starts at 9:46 a.m.  WTAW
  • Today, the No. 9 Texas A&M volleyball team travels to the Tudor Fieldhouse for the Rice Invitational to face the Owls and will play Central Arkansas on Saturday. The Aggies beat Minnesota recently and are led by standout Logan Lednicky—aiming to build on their win streak.  WTAW
