- ➤ Lizett Hawkins, the new President and CEO of United Way of the Brazos Valley, spoke with WTAW's Chelsea Reber about her background and plans to expand local support — she outlined her vision and announced a kickoff event set for later this month — as she takes the helm of the organization. WTAW
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Gunfire erupted Sunday night on Rudder freeway in Bryan when a driver honked at another near the Briarcrest overpass—igniting a police chase that ended with 28-year-old Daquandrance Bell being arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon—possessing a gun as a convicted felon—and evading after his car ran two stop signs and was later found near the city cemetery at MLK near Dansby with a truck window hit by a stray shot. - ➤ Texas A&M University and The Association of Former Students announced 12 honorees for the 2025 Distinguished Alumnus Award, including Buc-ee’s founder Arch 'Beaver' Aplin III and former NFL quarterback Gary Kubiak—each is recognized for his strong career and community service. The recipients will be celebrated with a gala on Oct. 3 and at a football game on Oct. 4 against Mississippi State. The Eagle
- ➤ Texas A&M University and The Association of Former Students selected 12 individuals for the 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award — including Arch “Beaver” Aplin III and Gary Kubiak — for their career achievements. - ➤ Last month, Texas A&M students moving into The Aria apartments found many units dirty and under-furnished—some even with black mold in the vents. Management said isolated issues have been addressed while repairs and upgrades are planned to fix problems like water leaks and poor cleaning. The Eagle
- ➤ Last week, the Texas A&M System Board of Regents held the second meeting of its new research committee where research vice chancellor Joe Elabd shared that Texas A&M spent $1.4 billion on research during the 2024 fiscal year—while five regional universities spent a combined $177 million. Committee chairman John Bellinger said the system will add more R-1 and R-2 universities and stressed that College Station must maintain its mark of excellence. WTAW

- ➤ On Wednesday, Brazos County commissioners held a public workshop to discuss a proposal to add a fourth floor shell space and boost parking by about 65–70 spaces at the new courthouse annex at 101 N. Texas Ave for an extra $10 million—aiming to better serve growing county needs in the future. The Eagle

- ➤ Texas A&M’s Mitchell Tennis Center will host the ITA Texas Regional from Oct. 17th–Oct. 21st—players from various Texas schools will compete for qualifying spots in the NCAA singles and doubles championships. WTAW
- ➤ Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed was named to the Manning Award Stars of the Week list after throwing for a career-best four touchdowns and 289 yards in the season opener against UTSA — the Aggies won 42-24 — and he will host Utah State at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday on the SEC Network. WTAW
- ➤ Texas A&M punter Tyler White was named one of 'Ray's 8' for week 1 by the Augusta Sports Council and Ray Guy Award committee on Tuesday—he punted seven times for an average of 46 yards with three landing inside the 20 during the Aggies' win over UTSA. WTAW
